Shephard spent some time in South Africa where these birds are indigenous.

In this linocut he captures their richly coloured plumage, their elongated tail feathers and down-turned bills. He also captures their characteristic open perch, adopted as a launching site from which to catch bees and insects. Each sentinel is here resplendent against the blue of the South African sky.
